Beginning Sounds – Consonants
FREE
Description
Here are 21 sets of picture cards for teaching beginning consonant sounds.
For the complete alphabet, you’ll also need the Beginning Sounds – Vowels Set .
The pictures in these sets come from from a few different royalty-free and licensed sources, so the image styles vary quite a bit. Many –maybe half?– of the images are recycled from other flashcard sets on this site and combined here for a new purpose.
Each flashcard set contains 1 lowercase letter and 8 pictures of words that begin with that letter. Well, three letters (q, x and z) have fewer than 8 words 🙁 All of the consonants have their own card set which prints on a single page. The PDFs are bundled so you don’t have to download 21 separate files to get all the letters.
Right now, only small size flashcard sets are available. You can download them with or without word labels under the pictures.
Vocabulary notes:
- Most of the pictures are nouns, with a few exceptions such as hug, jump, sleep, stop, quiet, up and under.
- An X exception: the letter x words are not beginning sounds, they are final sounds, as in box and six,
- The C and G sets include hard c and hard g sounds only– no soft c or g words means no celery or giraffes, sorry.
