Description
Sight words are high-frequency words children can learn to recognize quickly and automatically, without having to decode the letters sounds by sound.
One common list of sight words was created by Dr. Edward Dolch in 1936. The Dolch list consists of 220 frequently occurring words which is said to cover 50 to 75% of the vocabulary words that readers will encounter in print.
The Dolch 220 word list is divided into around 40-50 words per grade level. Nouns are not included; there is an additional list of 95 high-frequency nouns.
Because children don’t have to decode the sounds of the words that they can recognize by sight, memorizing sight words makes reading easier and faster.
